THE CROC CHRONICLES or WHEN CROCS ATTACK
by the PCC Journalism Staff
Name a more iconic duo than your left Croc and your right Croc. You literally can’t.
These comfortable, slip-on rubber shoes have taken PCC by storm this summer. Since their introduction in 2002, these shoes have gone in and out of fashion, but have made a comeback in 2018, becoming the most popular footwear here on the Stonehill campus. Whether they are here to stay is up to much fierce debate.
“They are here to stay. You know it!” First Year Sophia Kyranos proclaims with intense passion.
Second Year Sophie Nelson doesn’t even agree that there is a debate. “I’ve been wearing Crocs my entire life,” she explains, “and I’m not going to stop.”
First year proctor Ms. Elman is more skeptical. “Fashion trends come and go,” she says. “It’s like that with everything. Crocs are cool now, but they might not be cool next year.”
The shoes gain their name from their distinctive shape, looking like the snout of a crocodile. They are known for being easy to slip on and comfortable for everyday wear. The tread inside keeps the shoe from slipping off, and the lack of soles cuts down on foot odor. Fashioned out of a specially made synthetic fiber, Crocs have drainage holes on the side and holes on the top for ventilation to allow the feet to breathe.
The holes can also hold Jibbitz, little ornaments that allow you to customize your Crocs with fun characters and designs. Legendary Proctor Mr. Leonard says he likes Crocs because it allows him to express himself through his Jibbitz. “Your sneakers are always going to be the same,” Sophie Nelson argues. “But Jibbitz let you update your Crocs every season so they are always relevant.” The back strap is called “the adventure strap.” Eoin Gallagher explains the strap this way: “The strap lets people know what you’re doing. If it’s against your heel, you’re ready for adventure. If it’s down, you’re just hanging out and relaxing.”
At present, the price of Crocs might make them cost-prohibitive for some people. They average $30 for the Classic Croc, but deals can be found at the Wrentham outlets and on Amazon, as well as the recurring sales at the Croc stores themselves.
Time will tell if the Croc stays at its current apex as PCC’s most popular shoe. But to Sophie Nelson, it doesn’t matter. “I just love them so much,” she says.
