K-9 UNIT VISITS PCC IN THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

By the Young Voices Staff

A perennial PCC favorite returned this July 31st, as the K-9 units from several local towns brought their specially trained canine agents to impress the students of PCC. Four dogs were brought for the demonstrations, and they each took turns performing different skills. The presentation started off with a routine drug search; the dog was able to find drugs the police had hidden inside a truck and in an officer’s pocket. A second dog was brought out to display his attack and take-down skills. The officers sicced the dog on their newest member and joked that it was part of a “hazing.” The dog easily took down the heavily armored officer and showed why these dogs are such an important tool  for law enforcement. Several methods the dog used to take down “the suspect” included jamming his snout into the knees and jumping up on him. The K-9 unit also had the dog show how he would take down a fleeing suspect as well as defending one of the officers from attack. The police also brought out a young puppy who was going through the training. The presentation ended with the officers inviting up PCC student Mollie Coyne, who has been raising money to pay for protective gear for the K-9 dogs, to offer their thanks and acknowledge her efforts on their behalf.
