PCC KICKS OFF SUMMER WITH FLYING COLORS
by Young Voices staff
With PCC students and proctors still getting settled into their temporary summer home at Stonehill College, they took time on Tuesday night to celebrate their first week of the program at the annual Color Dance. Students repped their floor colors as they flooded into Alumni Hall for this first dance of the summer.
Following dinner, the quad was festooned with a rainbow of colors, as students and proctors waited anxiously for the dance to begin. Waves of pink, aqua, lime, yellow, orange, and red streamed into Alumni Hall, filling the venue with color and PCC spirit. Before the music began, students took seats on the dance floor to watch the PCC players perform some classic PCC skits. Returning students celebrated the return of Mr. Leonard’s stories the infamous Randy Beeman. They later cheered when Mr. Leonard placed a chair in the center of the stage, signalling the beginning of the classic “Cake Skit.” In the skit, a young boy played by Mr. Ryan eats poisoned cake batter prepared by his grandmother. First year students were a bit puzzled by the rapturous roar of the returning students, but ultimately joined in by the skit’s end. “It was confusing at first, but by the end, most of us got what was happening,” first-year Riley Getchell explained. “I didn’t get why the returning students cheered when it was announced that the kid (from the Cake Skit) has died, but as they repeated the sketch, I got the joke,” added Abigail Ricker, another first-year student. Other skits included the reviled and revered Toothpaste and Pictionary sketches, as well as Ms. Pennington’s fortune teller, a substitute teacher routine starring real-life teacher Ms. Martino, and a Hoedown fashion show.
The pre-dance festivities continued with various halls and students battling it out in a series of game shows. Students and proctors cheered on Mr. Lalli’s and Mr. Slater’s halls as they faced off in cup-stacking. Team Lalli emerged victorious, but it was a closely-fought contest. “I thought Slater’s hall had it taller, and I thought they were going to win, but I guess not,” according to first-year student Riley Bettes. Students Hannah Matheny and Shea Hilton went head-to-head in a battle of speed to create a flag consisting of the PCC floor colors. It was another close contest, but Shea came out on top with his flag, although not without some controversy. His choice to layer five red strips with one piece of tape brought in a judge’s review, but he was ultimately crowned the winner.
Once the music started, PCC got to its feet and started dancing. Several returning favorites made appearances including “Love Shack” and “Africa”(the Toto original). There were also several line dances as well, including “Cottoneye Joe,” “Cupid Shuffle,” and “the Wobble.” These were a big hit with the new students. “The line dances have a routine to them that lets everybody participate,” first-year Abigail Ricker explained. The evening with the PCC classics “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “American Pie,” with returning students joining together in circles to sing along. It was reported that some had tears in their eyes at the end of the evening, but Young Voices staff has been unable to confirm these tears at press time.
The Color Dance was a huge success and signalled that PCC 2019 is off to a terrific start for the summer.
