by Vanessa Cardin, Angelo DePlacido, and Michael Loftus
In recent years, horror movies have evolved into one of the most common blockbuster and attention seeking genres of films. However, in the mid-20th century, the Golden Years of Horror occurred. Films like Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, and the Exorcist helped pushed the boundaries for film-making. Without these golden years of horror, you definitely don't get movies like IT, Insidious, The Conjuring, or Paranormal Activity. We are going to examine how and why these films are so essential to pop culture and entertainment.
Whether you believe it or not, modern films such as Birdbox, Insidious, and the Conjuring have a history and influence that spans all the way back to the year 1960. Many key elements of horror movies like building up suspense, bone chilling and thought provoking plot twists, and even jump scares first found a home in movie theaters during the mid-20th century. Although the jump-scare factor wasn't completely developed during this time, it began a cult following that still goes on to this day.
The horror genre has evolved into a following that includes die-hard fans that would do anything to praise and promote the culture of horror. The authors of this article debated many film questions (like whether or not the Exorcist was a good movie) but in the end, we agreed on what goes into making a successful horror film.
The films discussed are ones that everybody should see. These movies are one that people love to watch as part of their hobbies. Whether you're watching Psycho or Insidious, that terrifying feeling is always there. From the cinematography to the production to the make-up, it's interesting to see what people expect to come onto the silver screen. So, therefore, the next time you're talking to someone, always ask them..."Do you like scary movies?"
