QUIDDITCH TOURNAMENT LEAVES PCC SPELLBOUND
by Ciara Lonergan
The Rec Fields July 18th and 19th, 2017 were filled with magic as the students of PCC began a spectacular tournament of the popular game of Quidditch from the world of the famous Harry Potter book and movie series. You didn’t have to be a witch, wizard, or even in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to play; you only needed a growth mindset and a smile.
The rules are very simple. Three people, called Chasers, toss around a frisbee and attempt to get it into a square marked by four cones. One goal is ten points. The goalie, or Keeper, prevents the opposite team’s Chasers from scoring a goal. On the side of the field, two people called Beaters throw dodgeballs at the opponent’s Chasers. If a Chaser is hit by a dodgeball, they must go to a jail where only their team’s Keeper can tag them out. While all of this is happening, one person from each team rides a pool noodle like a broomstick to catch a person dressed in bright yellow who acts as the Golden Snitch. Those two people are called Seekers. The Seekers run through the Rec Fields to get one of the two tennis balls hanging from the Snitch’s belt. If they get the right one, then their team gets an extra 50 points.
The first match was on July 18th, and was Gryffindor vs. Slytherin. After a tough fight, Gryffindor came out on top. Then, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were set against each other. In the end, Ravenclaw was victorious. The next day, July 19th, tension was high. After an intensive match, Gryffindor beat Ravenclaw 130 to 110.
It was a wondrous two days of the wizarding world’s famous sport. Despite Gryffindor winning the game, everyone was equally sweaty and smiling after the event. This Quidditch match will undoubtedly go down in PCC history.
